What is Karnavedha?

The term Karnavedha is made of two Sanskrit words: Karna, meaning ears, and Vedha, meaning piercing. Together, they represent the practice of ear piercing in kids. It is one of the essential samskaras of the Hindu religion and is performed for both girls and boys.

Most parents plan the Karnavedha ritual between 6 months and 5 years of their child’s age. A priest is consulted to determine the most auspicious muhurat for the ritual, who decides the time after analysing the child's horoscope and various astrological factors. Also, since there is no fixed age for performing the ceremony, some families perform it in later years. 

How is Karnavedha performed?

• A goldsmith or a trained professional pierces the baby’s ears using a needle. A gold/silver wire or earring is inserted into the hole to ensure it does not close again in the future. Oil is applied to avoid infections. 
• Lastly, the family members shower the child with blessings and gifts. 
• A feast and family celebrations usually follow this.
